NZ Govt tries to shut down blogger hosted blog

25 January, 2007

CYFS turns to Google to close site – NZ Herald

I’m not sure what if any laws are being broken by the Ant-CYFS Blog, but it will be very interesting to see how Google reacts. New Zealand isn’t exactly China, and this smells of bully tactics. If the blog is breaking laws then the govt should go after the blog author, not Google.

It seems allegations of defimation are not enough to get a blogger shut down according to a previous letter from google about another blogspot blog:

Thank you for writing regarding content posted on blogspot.com. Although we host that site, we are not in a position to adjudicate whether the content is defamatory or not.
Accordingly, consistent with section 230(c ) of the Communications Decency Act, Blogger does not remove material in response to allegations of defamation. In cases where a contact email address is listed on the page, we recommend working directly with the author to have this information removed or changed.
We are sorry we cannot assist you further at this time.

I wonder if that is the email the NZ govt will get on this matter?
