Woosh VoIP

21 November, 2005

So I'm a bit late with the pickup of this story, but woosh has, 2 years late, launched it's VoIP services.

This makes Woosh Wireless the 2nd NZ ISP I know of to launch commercial VoIP services. Unlike Ihug, Woosh managed to get a number portibility deal with Telecom.

I have not had a chance to test the service yet but from the TV news story it looked like they were using the X-Lite VoIP software. Their product page confirms this.

A couple of questions come up when you look at Option #2..

woosh x-lite [16216 bytes]

The VoIP software in the above screenshot is either a co-branded version X-Lite Free or X-Pro. X-Lite free can be downloaded free from xten.com. I can't see any way to buy or download X-Pro from xten's website, but from memory the difference is how many lines you can have. So are woosh selling free software? I know that the X-Lite Free version is fine for most people, it's not a demo or shareware but fully functional software.

The 2nd thing is what is up with

The Software Phone is not compatible with any Mac operating system.

.. the X-Lite version from Xten has versions for Mac and Linux as well, and the woosh modem works with Mac and Linux, so why can't you use woosh software phone with mac or linux?
